Internships

ENV3202A Summer internship programme

We designed our summer internship programme to help BES students gain working experience in the environmental industry and prepare them for employment after graduation.

During their undergraduate studies, students absorb reams of information and learn lots of new skills via many means, including (but not limited to) lectures, field trips, labs, tutorials and completing assessments for grades. We generally test whether they’ve acquired the requisite knowledge and abilities via assignments and exams – a process that is totally appropriate to the university setting. However, these assessments cannot, no matter how authentic they are, fully replicate the ways in which students will be tested once they graduate and enter the “real world”. In fact, nothing can really prepare them for this “real world”. They just have to experience it for themselves, and this is the rationale behind having an internship programme.

Internships are essential in helping students to transit from university to the workforce. We believe that giving our students the chance to (1) assimilate what they’ve learned in school and apply it to performing valuable tasks in the workplace and (2) acquire hard-to-teach soft skills gives them an edge when they eventually transition to the work force.

HOW IT WORKS

Students may take ENV3202A during the summer special term following their 2nd or 3rd year into the degree programme*.

Each intern completes a structured and supervised internships (full-time) within a host organisation for 10-12 weeks** during the special terms. Assessment deadlines extend to 2 weeks after the end of the internship.
